The subject for my MJP Gratitude Challenge for today is : Vegetable Gardens.
I don’t remember seeing a vegetable garden that I didn’t like. What is it about them that seems so comfortable? Is it the spring ritual that we perform year after year? Buying seeds, prepping the beds, planning where to plant what…….
I think they are appealing because it’s they’re so basic. No matter how plain or how fancy a vegetable garden is, it is still just a human, planting seeds in the earth, in hopes of gathering food.
I consider vegetable gardens the Great Equalizers. Even the richest person we know is allowed giddiness over a homegrown, vine ripened tomato.
These are such personal gardens. You are able to catch a glimpse of the gardener that you won’t see in the other areas of the landscape. What is your favorite part of a veggie garden?

I am starting to get our vegetable garden ready for next year’s season too – digging in lots of horse manure compost. My favourite part of our potager is the asparagus bed, for its longevity.

I can’t pick a favorite part, I love it all. Well, I like weeding, I don’t love weeding, but the rest is great. Now you’ve got me wanting to revive my garden this year! Lol

Tomatos are my favorite. There’s nothing like a garden fresh tomato, and knowing that I grew it myself makes it taste even better! Now if I could just figure out a way to get rid of those nasty little white flies….

They make a spray for whiteflies. I’ve used it in my greenhouse. I really think tomatoes have to be the #1 garden favorite. Don’t you? Thanks Ann. 😊

If you don’t mind my asking, what kind of spray did you use? I have one, but it doesn’t seem to work very well. I’ve had tomatoes for about six years, but in the last two years the white flies have been horrible and pretty much ruined my tomatoes. I’m usually pretty easy going, but I have come to hate those little critters!

I don’t remember exactly what brand it was. Sorry! I don’t have trouble with whiteflies except in the greenhouse. We are too dry outside for them. I know that they are attracted to yellow. If you can find a yellow sticky trap made for whiteflies, you might give them a try.

All vege gardens are wonderful places. I love the TLC that people give them .. I do! Love seeing what other people grow too!

We plant peas on St Paddy’s Day here. I am looking forward to it. Last year the ground was frozen as hard as a brick bat. I think we will be fine this year.

It’s never the same, is it? We are early this year. Warm weather, everything looking like spring. Now hoping the wheat doesn’t freeze. That’s farming….

I’m jealous! I haven’t been able to have a vegetable garden for five years due to the demands of my job in summer, which left my garden in weeds one year. There’s nothing like getting your hands dirty and seeing those first little vegies on the vine.

That’s a bummer Kim, because you are so right, there is nothing like it! If it makes you feel better, my garden ends up in weeds quite often, but it never stops me the next year!! Lol. 😊

Beautiful! I love water melons, and berries a lot. I would like to be brave and try avocados, but that requires more time and patience.. Thank you for joining the challenge!

I love the MJP Gratitude Challenge. It’s such a good thing to look around and think about what I’m grateful for. I don’t have the water to do well with melons, but I do LOVE the berries!….and oh if I could grow avacados…….😊

Growing for the table is all around pleasing. From the back-breaking digging and turning of soil to the meticulous weeding and pruning. And of course most of all the picking and eating. I think there can be nothing finer than a tiny brand new potato steamed and served with a know of butter and some mint from the herb patch. Where I mostly live in Southern France (mostly because this year I am mostly in New England) pretty much everyone has a potager and pretty much everyone grows leeks, chard and pumpkins along with whatever else they happen to love. And garlic, bien sûr 😉
