Old and new. Fast and slow.
Old and new. Fast and slow.

I love this picture for the contrasts.   It shows Lizzie, my donkey getting herself a cool drink from our old cement tank.   As near as we can estimate, the tank was made by hand, in the 1940s or 1930s.  The modern sophisticated farm machinery  and shop in the background seem to be from a completely different world.   To me though, this represents agriculture so perfectly:  most farmers and ranchers that I know are using the latest technology to do the best job possible for their business.  Yet, an experienced eye, intuition  and knowledge passed from one generation to the next is still so valuable and something you can’t appreciate enough……..just like the timeless image of a little donkey, quenching her thirst on a hot day.

I can just picture teams of draft horses, returning from the field at lunch time, quenching their thirsts. I love the old ways and excuse the new…..

I grew up with coffee, cows and good horses being the driving forces. What a wonderful, pure life……yet I do find the new technology exciting. Especially as a way to link our next generation to the farm.
